E-M:/ Activists aim to undercut sand-mining expansion

Nugent Sand Co. has applied for a state permit to continue its sand-mining operation in Norton Shores dunes through 2012, and environmentalists are crying foul.
Though the permit application is a procedural matter, local environmentalists said the state should not approve it. Critics said it would be inappropriate for the DEQ to consider Nugent's permit when the company is embroiled in a legal tussle with the state over its plan to extend a pipeline through the Lake Michigan dunes and discharge 8 million gallons of treated process wastewater into the lake each day.
