2005-2006 Community Forest Grants Awarded
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources today announced the award of 32 grants totaling $109,895 for community forest projects statewide. A list of this year's award recipients is attached.
The competitive grant program is a cooperative effort between the DNR, the USDA Forest Service and the Michigan Urban and Community Forest Council. Funds are awarded to projects that preserve and expand community tree cover; develop professional, resourced-based inventories and management plans; and educate the public about the benefits of trees and natural resources.
The grants are funded through the USDA Forest Service's State and Private Forestry Program. Cost-share funds are available to local communities, schools and nonprofit entities. Grants require dollar-for-dollar matching funds toward projects performed on non-federal public lands or lands open to the public. Grant awards will be distributed this month for projects scheduled for completion by September 2006.
For more information, contact DNR Urban and Community Forester Kevin Sayers at (517) 241-4632 or visit www.mi.gov/dnrucf.
The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
