WASHTENAW COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF PLANNING AND ENVIRONMENT

ANN ARBOR, MI – November 2, 2005

Washtenaw County is doing its part to promote America Recycles Day.  On Thursday, November 10, from 5:00 pm – 8:00 pm the Washtenaw County Department of Planning and Environment will be hosting its third annual Washtenaw County Recycles Day Celebration.  The event will be held at Leopold Bros. Brewery, 523 South Main Street, in Ann Arbor.  This is not only an opportunity to celebrate recycling, but also the Waste Knot Program and its partners.

This year marks the ninth anniversary of America Recycles Day – a national event held to promote the importance of recycling.  The focus of this year’s event is purchasing recycled content products. Buying recycled keeps reusable materials in the economy, reduces the amount of waste entering our landfills and conserves energy. By participating in this environmentally conscious activity, businesses and individuals create viable markets for recycled products. This year, America Recycles Team Michigan has implemented its “Close the Loop” award program to recognize businesses that make a continual effort to practice and promote the benefits of waste reduction and recycling.

Washtenaw County boasts over 170 Waste Knot partners, or local businesses, schools, non-profits and governmental agencies that have demonstrated leadership in waste reduction, recycling and closing the loop. This year’s Washtenaw County Recycles Day Celebration is intended to educate the public on Waste Knot partners that make recycling and community leadership a top priority, and to encourage citizens to support these local businesses.  Waste Knot partners receive free public recognition, free consulting, solid waste and recycling service discounts and technical assistance that help partners save money while protecting the environment.

This event is free and will include complimentary food, raffle prizes and educational displays.  In keeping with the theme of America Recycles Day, we will be raffling off fleece jackets made with 87% recycled material. Attendees can fill out an America Recycles Day pledge card at the event that automatically enters them into a nationwide raffle to win a Ford Hybrid Escape!
