DNR Purchases Schoolcraft County Tracts
for Additional Winter Deeryard

Two tracts of land in Schoolcraft County will be used to develop more winter deeryard habitat following the approval of their purchase at the Natural Resources Commission Thursday in Roscommon.

The tracts, located in Hiawatha Township, were purchased for $318,000 and approved by Department of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries. They total 271.67 acres and will be used to provide winter thermal cover for white-tailed deer.

"This property is adjacent to state-owned land and is part of a larger winter-complex habitat for white-tailed deer," said DNR Director Rebeccca Humphries. "It is heavily utilized by deer migrating from the Lake Superior watershed and will provide them food and cover during the winter season."

The tracts represent another in a series of on-going acquisitions by the DNR in Michigan's Upper Peninsula which are intended to protect available winter-complex habitat and enhance winter survival. The forest cover on the tracts is dominated by mixed lowland conifer species and northern white cedar.
The tracts were purchased with funds made available by the Legislature for deer habitat acquisition, and are part of the DNR's goal of limiting land fragmentation and securing wildlife corridors.
The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
