DNR Hosts Open Houses on Nov. 29 and 30
in Traverse City Forest Management Unit

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host two open houses Nov. 29 and 30 to provide information and receive public comment on forest management treatments proposed for 2007 in the Traverse City management unit.

The Nov. 29 open house will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Traverse City DNR Field Office located at 970 Emerson Road. The focus will be on the Grand Traverse, Benzie, Manistee and Leelanau county forest areas. The Nov. 30 open house will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Kalkaska DNR Field Office located at 2089 N. Birch Street. This meeting will focus on Kalkaska County.

Each year DNR personnel inventory and evaluate one-tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes the health, quality and quantity of all vegetation; wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archeological sites; mineral, oil and gas activities; recreational use; wildfire potential and social factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods; and use on adjacent lands, public or private. Proposed treatments are then designated to insure the sustainability and diversity of the resources and ecosystems.

The open house is an opportunity for the public to review proposed treatments and provide input toward final decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about issues of interest. Maps and information regarding the proposed treatments will be available at the open house and may be accessed online at www.michigan.gov/dnr, or by contacting David Lemmien, Traverse City unit manager, at 231-922-5280, ext. 6840.

Each management unit is divided into smaller units or compartments to facilitate better administration of the resources. Townships with compartments in Benzie County include Platte, Almira and Inland. Townships with compartments in Grand Traverse are Whitewater and Union. Manistee County will include compartments in Manistee, Marilla, Stronach and Cleon townships. Townships with compartments in Kalkaska County are Blue Lake, Oliver, Garfield East, Garfield Central, Garfield South and Bear Lake South. There are not compartments to review in Leelanau County this year, however, any concerns or questions concerning management of state forests may be discussed.

Formal compartment reviews to finalize prescriptions for the Grand Traverse, Leelanau, Manistee and Benzie county areas are scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Tuesday, Dec. 13, at the East Bay Township Hall located at 1965 Three Mile Road North. The Kalkaska County area formal compartment review is scheduled for 9 a.m. Wednesday, Dec. 14, at the Kalkaska Township Hall located at 209 Laurel Street. Persons with disabilities who need accommodations for these meetings should contact Traverse City Unit Manager David Lemmien at 231-922-5280, ext. 6840.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
