DNR Hosts Open House Dec. 1
in Roscommon Forest Management Unit

The Michigan Department of Natural Resources will host an open house Dec. 1 to provide information and receive public comment on forest management treatments proposed for 2007 in the Roscommon management unit.

The open house will be held from 3 to 7 p.m. at the Roscommon DNR Field Office located at 8717 N. Roscommon Road, just off of Interstate 75 at Exit 239. The field office is located directly behind the DNR's Roscommon Operations Service Center.

Each year DNR personnel inventory and evaluate one-tenth of the state forest. The information gathered includes the health, quality and quantity of all vegetation; wildlife and fisheries habitat and needs; archeological sites; mineral, oil and gas activities; recreational use; wildfire potential and social factors, including proximity to roads and neighborhoods; and use on adjacent lands, public or private. Proposed treatments are then designated to insure the sustainability and diversity of the resources and ecosystems.

The open house is an opportunity for the public to review proposed treatments and provide input toward final decisions on those treatments. It also provides the public an opportunity to talk with foresters and biologists about issues of interest. Maps and information regarding the proposed treatments will be available at the open house and may be accessed online at www.michigan.gov/dnr, or by contacting Steve Anderson, Roscommon unit manager, at 989-275-4622, extension 2740.

Each management unit is divided into smaller units or compartments to facilitate better administration of the resources. The Roscommon unit open house and compartment review will focus on compartments in Roscommon and Ogemaw counties. Townships with compartments in Roscommon County include Roscommon, Richfield, Backus, Denton, Higgins, Markey, AuSable, Lake, Lyon and Gerrish. The townships with compartments in Ogemaw County include Foster, Horton and West Branch.

Formal compartment reviews to finalize prescriptions for these areas is scheduled to begin at 9 a.m. Thursday, Dec. 15, at the Roscommon Operations Service Center. Persons with disabilities needing accommodations for these meetings should contact Steve Anderson, Roscommon unit manager, at 989-275-4622, extension 2740.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
