Dear Concerned Citizen of Michigan,

We need your help to protect your property values and the health of our environment!

The Michigan House and Senate have passed concurring legislation HB 4617 (S3) that needs your immediate attention!

This legislation sets dangerous precedent that is relevant to all of us in Michigan. It will make the cleanup of dioxin and other dangerous chemicals nearly impossible - and most importantly it could make future cleanups in any community, difficult, expensive, and slow.

Join Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice (www.dwej.org) in protesting this threat to Michigan's communities and economic health. Send a message to Governor Granholm on our website or call her at (517) 373-3400 and ask her to veto HB 4617 (S3). Governor Granholm has until December 22 to decide whether or not she'll veto this bill. Let her know how you feel today!

Legislators trying to protect polluters are proposing to change the way the state manages our cleanup laws. HB 4617 (S3) would remove the state's ability to designate some property as a "facility" or potentially contaminated site. The result will be more expensive cleanups, slower cleanups, and increased liability for individual property owners whose property may be contaminated. Residents may actually lose the ability to force polluters to pay. In addition, the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" provisions of the bill would prevent property owners from knowing that their property is contaminated, would prevent future owners from being informed, and would prevent the Department of Environmental Quality from doing anything about it, even if the property owners wanted a clean-up. This bill actually diminishes the rights of owners and future owners of properties! This bill is especially harmful to efforts to rebuild the City of Detroit as a World Class city.

This is our home and we need to act today!

Please email or call Governor Granholm and ask her to veto HB 4617 (S3). Again, our website is www.dwej.org and her phone number is (517) 373-3400. Please call or email today - she will make her decision within the next week. If you email or call, please let us know that you have contacted the Governor by using the form on our website or by calling Detroiters Working for Environmental Justice at (313) 821-1064 to let us know.

The message is simple: Governor Granholm, please veto HB 4617 (S3).

Thank you for your support,

Guy O. Williams
Board Chair
