E-M:/ EPA Proposing More Stringent Particle Air Pollution Standards

Enviro-Mich message from "Alexander J. Sagady" <ajs@sagady.com>

Yesterday, EPA announced its proposal for new, more stringent
particulate air pollution standards for airborne particles 2.5 microns
or less and particles 10 microns or less. These will have major
consequences for Michigan and public health.

Michigan clearly has particle air pollution problems known to cause
deaths and serious respiratory illness at the present time.

Unfortunately, most of the news media and many affected
organizations are still stuck in a time-warped frame of thinking
that summertime ozone is the only air pollution problem worthy
of noting and that particle air pollution doesn't matter.

Today, "moderate" air pollution for PM 2.5 is widespread across

http://www.deq.state.mi.us/aqi/AQI.asp but if one of the
new standards goes into effect, today's moderate air pollution
in Wayne County would be regarded as a clear public health
standard violation. Grand Rapids, Southeastern Michigan and
other locations in Michigan would have many days per year that
would violate EPA's proposed standard.....and throughout the year...not
just in the summertime.

Here is EPA's new wetsite on the proposed particle air pollution
