E-M:/ Thank Governor Granholm for supporting transit

Enviro-Mich message from sgutt@umich.edu

Dear Supporters of Transit:

Yesterday, Governor Granholm vetoed HB 4993, a bill that would have allowed multi-governmental units in Kent County (Grand Rapids area), but not elsewhere in Michigan, to ask citizens to levy local taxes for long-term transit funding.

Granholm sent the message back to the legislature to send her a bill that would grant multi-government units and transit authorities anywhere in the state the same authority: to allow citizens to vote to raise local transit funding for projects in their regions.

Rep. Jerry Kooiman, whose district is Grand Rapids, sponsored HB 4993. His region is seeking the ability to raise local revenue to help fund a fixed-rail transit system there.

Please consider calling or writing Governor Granholm's office to thank her for standing up for transit for all of Michigan.

Please call or write Rep. Kooiman's office to ask him to encourage the Michigan Legislature to grant all of Michigan the same revenue raising authority that he is seeking for his own region.
