E-M:/ MSU Beef Cattle Facility is Being Re-constructed

Enviro-Mich message from "Anne Woiwode" <Anne.Woiwode@sierraclub.org>

A good news story of progress against a polluting facility at the end of
this year!

At the beginning of 2005, Sierra Club Mackinac Chapter brought a complaint
to Michigan DEQ through work of our environmental consultant, Alex Sagady,
about animal waste contamination of stormwater from the Michigan State
University Beef Cattle Teaching and Research Center.

Because of the design of the facility and stormwater flows, pollution from
this site had been reaching area drains and thus the Red Cedar River for the
last 40 years as no one at MSU or MDEQ (which had participated in a
stormwater review and Red Cedar studies) ever recognized the ongoing

Subsequently, MSU was required to submit an application for a National
Pollution Discharge Elimination System Permit and to develop a comprehensive
nutrient management plan.

As a result of the Sierra Club enforcement activity, MSU abandoned an open
feedlot area on the east side of the facility in early 2005 and this past
fall, the animal housing areas of the Beef Cattle Center production area
were demolished.

The MSU Beef Cattle Center is presently being reconstructed to eliminate the
problems that were part of the old facility. A recent photograph shows
construction activity for the new animal housing areas on both the east and
west sides of the facility are shown at:

We know the MSU Department of Animal Science and the Beef Cattle Center will
ultimately end up with a better facility that will be in full compliance
with Federal and State water pollution control regulations and will be the
exemplar that is needed for this agricultural sector.

Thanks in particular to Alex Sagady for having spotted the original problems
and compiled the documentation and analysis showing the violations!
