Arbor Day Mini-Grants Awarded

Michigan Department of Natural Resources officials, in partnership with the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance, announced grants totaling $10,000 have been awarded through the DNR's Urban and Community Forestry Program to 50 Michigan communities and organizations for Arbor Day activities.

The grant program, with funds from the USDA Forest Service, was created to assist schools and communities with Arbor Day celebrations, such as tree plantings or the purchase of forestry-related reference materials for libraries.

Grant recipients receive up to $200 in matching funds for projects performed under the grant. Grant awards will be distributed for projects scheduled for completion by June 2006. Attached is the list of grant recipients.

Arbor Day was initiated in 1872 by J. Sterling Morton, a journalist living in the Nebraska Territory, and has been observed as an official state holiday in Michigan since 1885. In 1965, former Governor George Romney proclaimed the last week of April as Arbor Week, and designated the Friday of that week to celebrate Arbor Day. In Michigan, Arbor Day will be observed on April 28, 2006.

For more information, contact Kevin Sayers, DNR urban forestry coordinator, at (517) 241-4632, or visit the Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnrucf. To learn more about Arbor Day celebrations in your community, contact the Michigan Arbor Day Alliance at (517) 337-4999 or visit their Web site at www.miarbordayalliance.org.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
