E-M:/ Re: State Forest Planning Initiatives Slated for 2006 and 2007

Enviro-Mich message from Tim Flynn <timf@mac.com>

Lynne, Mary,

This announcement is pretty vague. Will there be anything to comment on in the mid-March to April timeframe? Something like, draft plans, or outlines?

Given that the statewide forest plan is due to be completed in June of this year, there should be draft the that public can comment on. To give substantive comments, we need something substantive to comment on.

State Forest Planning Initiatives Slated for 2006 and 2007

Department of Natural Resources officials today announced that the department has initiated the development of statewide and three eco- regional state forest management plans involving multiple divisions of the DNR. The plans are a requirement of forest certification, which the state of Michigan recently achieved.

"The goal of the planning initiatives is to enable an integrated, multidisciplinary landscape-level approach to planning that is consistent with the principles of sustainable forest management, and that will further our commitment to maintaining certification of our forest operations," said DNR Director Rebecca Humphries.

The State of Michigan achieved forest certification from the Steward Forestry Initiative and Forest Stewardship Council in January.

Director Humphries said that the current planning effort builds upon public values that have been collected through a series of public meetings held by eco-regional planning teams over the past year as well as other resource planning initiatives. The management plans will be multidisciplinary in nature, and will address forest management within the context of a host of ecological, social and economic values, including forest products and health, terrestrial and aquatic landscape and community-based biodiversity and human uses and needs.

During mid-March and April, the DNR will be seeking public comment on the statewide management plan through a series of four public meetings and an Internet and email-based comment system. A series of additional meetings also will be held for the eco-regional management plans throughout 2006 and 2007. All public meetings will be announced once a schedule is finalized.

"The opinion of all public interests is a critical step in this planning process and we expect and welcome comment from a diverse range of citizens and organizations," Humphries said.

Completion of the statewide state forest management plan is slated for June of this year.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
