Great Lakes advocate Lee Botts will keynote the annual membership
meeting of the Ecology Center on Sunday, April 9, 2006, from 2:00 to
4:00 p.m., at the Michigan Union, at 530 S. State St., on the
University of Michigan campus in Ann Arbor.
Recognized around the world for her work to restore and protect the
Great Lakes, Lee Botts has been active in conservation and
environmental policy since the 1960s as a citizen advocate and
government official. She founded the citizen organization Lake Michigan
Federation in 1970, was appointed by former President Jimmy Carter to
chair the Great Lakes Basin Commission in 1978, served as director of
and consultant to the City of Chicago’s Department of the Environment,
and has been a leader in the conservation of the Indiana Dunes National
Lakeshore. In 2002, the 1400-member national Clean Water Network named
her as one of the 30 persons who had made the most difference under the
pioneering federal 1972 Clean Water Act.
The Ecology Center annual meeting also includes program updates,
environmental awards, and election of the Center's Board of Directors.
At the end of the meeting, Botts will sign copies of her new book,
Evolution of the Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. The meeting is
open to the general public, and admission is free. For more
information, please call (734) 761-3186 ext. 110.
