Greetings,

Representative Ehlers has informed us of an amendment to have the U.S. Department of Education convene a Summit on Sustainability. Please read his office's email message below and take the necessary actions if you are supportive. Time is of the essence with this one.

		I've attached a copy of the amendment Reps. Blumenauer, Ehlers & Wu hope to offer to H.R. 609 - the College Access and Opportunity Act.  This amendment requires the Secretary of Education to convene a Summit on Sustainability.
		 
		As I mentioned on the phone, the Rules Committee needs to make the amendment in order before it can be considered on the House floor.  I expect the Rules Committee will meet on Tuesday afternoon, and the bill will be considered on the House floor on Wednesday or Thursday.

AMENDMENT TO THE RULES COMMITTEE PRINT
OF MARCH 22, 2006
OFFERED BY MR. BLUMENAUER OF OREGON, MR.
EHLERS OF MICHIGAN, AND MR. WU OF OREGON
At the end of title IX of the Amendment add the following
new section:
SEC. ___. SUMMIT ON SUSTAINABILITY. 1
No later than May 2007, the Secretary of Education 2
shall convene a summit of higher education experts work- 3
ing in the area of sustainable operations and programs, 4
representatives from the agencies of the Federal Govern- 5
ment, and business and industry leaders to focus on ef- 6
forts of national distinction that- 7
(1) encourage faculty, staff, and students at in- 8
stitutions of higher education to establish both ad- 9
ministrative and educational sustainability programs 10
on campus; 11
(2) enhance research by faculty and students at 12
institutions of higher education in sustainability 13
practices and innovations that assist and improve 14
sustainability; 15
(3) encourage institutions of higher education 16
to work with community partners from the business, 17

government, and nonprofit sectors to design and im- 1
plement sustainability programs for application in 2
the community and workplace; and 3
(4) identify opportunities for partnerships in- 4
volving higher education institutions and the Federal 5
Government to expand sustainable operations and 6
academic programs focused on environmental and 7
economic sustainability. 8
