DEQ to Hold Third Annual Earth Day Celebration

On Thursday, April 20, the Department of Environmental Quality will be hosting its third annual Earth Day Celebration at Constitution Hall in Lansing. The day will feature a number of fun and educational exhibits for school groups visiting from across the state.

The Earth Day program will commence with opening remarks by DEQ Director Steven Chester, Department of Agriculture Director Mitch Irwin, and Department of Natural Resources Deputy Director Arminda Koch.

"We are once again excited to be hosting Michigan's Earth Day celebration," said Director Chester. "It's a wonderful opportunity for kids of all ages to learn about their environment, and how we can play a role in protecting it."

Director Chester will be delivering his Earth Day message at 11:00 a.m., joined by members of the environmental community from around the state.

More than 50 environmental activities and displays will be showcased throughout the day, including a number of hands-on exhibits and demonstrations for kids. Among other attractions will be a solar car that kids can operate in the parking lot; a "Risky Business" room, with information and activities for students to learn how to safely deal with some of our daily environmental risks; and the "Great Water Adventure of Molly Cule," where students build a water molecule and journey with her on a fun packed adventure as she travels through the water cycle.

The Goodwill Association and Dell Inc. will be collecting computers for recycling as part of the day's events.

The Michigan Department of Agriculture and the Department of Natural Resources are co-hosting the event with the DEQ. Other participating organizations include Asthma Initiative of Michigan, the City of Lansing, Corn Marketing Program of Michigan, Ducks Unlimited, General Motors, Goodwill Association and Dell Inc., Michigan State University Turfgrass Environmental Stewardship Program, Michigan Nature Association, Michigan Soybean Promotion Committee, Mid-Michigan Environmental Action Coalition, Sierra Club, Urban Options, West Michigan Clean Air Coalition, WILDSIDE Rehabilitation and Education Center, and Woldumar Nature Center.

Several of the DEQ district offices across the state will also be holding their own Earth Day activities.
