Re: E-M:/ Demand Net Neutrality from Congress

This effort by SBC/ATT and the cable companies to end net neutrality in favor of charging content providers more to gain access to the internet has repercussions for environmental groups.

It will inhibit the free flow of information and ultimately will curb innovation broadly. Not only are environmentalists currently on 'terrorist' watchlists (that's you there), but also in a network without Common Carriage, censorship by throttling the bandwidth of undesirable or at least underfunded sites would be not just feasible but the norm.

We may soon follow the Chinese censorship pattern that is already being supported by related companies.

Dear Friends,

As intense users of internet services for organizing, information and
action, the citizen environmental movement must absolutely insist
on maintaining internet carriers as common carriers that abide by
the principle of "NET NEUTRALITY."

As early as tomorrow the House Commerce Committee will vote on
legislation that may erode net neutrality. There is a substantial
effort by SBC/ATT and the cable companies to end net neutrality in
favor of charging content providers more to gain access to the internet.

Such a national policy would open the way for giant telecommunications
and cable companies to price non-profit organizations out of the market
on providing a full measure of web content. As a citizen-based movement
we cannot let that happen.

This battle now features "astroturf" web sites and organizations
intending to mislead the public....sites that are run by ATT and the
cable companies.

At a time when outfits like ATT/SBC are now allowing NSA to spy on
Americans by providing gateways to security organizations to run data
mining operations without search warrants or just cause, think of the
overall implications of allowing these large internet access monopolies
such a stranglehold over the communications means of the future.

Here is a posting that will introduce you to this issue. Please contact
your US Representative on Wednesday about the pending movement of this
legislation.
