2006 Land and Water Conservation Fund
Grant Applications Now Available

The Department of Natural Resources today announced that communities interested in applying for state grants to support outdoor community recreation programs have until July 1 to submit their applications to the Land and Water Conservation Fund (LWCF).

The LWCF is a federal fund that provides matching grants to state and local governments for the development of public outdoor recreation areas and facilities. The program is intended to create and maintain a nationwide legacy of high quality recreation areas and facilities and to stimulate non-federal investments in the protection and maintenance of recreation resources across the Untied States. In Michigan, a portion of the funds are passed through to local governments for development projects that will meet community recreation needs.

Approximately $781,000 is available for 2006 to be split equally between state and local projects. The focus of the program will be on community recreation needs, such as playgrounds, picnic areas, skate parks, ball fields, soccer fields and walking paths within a park.

The LWCF requires a minimum 50 percent local match. To be eligible to apply for a grant, a local unit of government must have a current five-year community recreation plan on file with the DNR prior to the application deadline. All new plans must be locally adopted and approved by the DNR by July 1 in order to be eligible for funding.

Grant application materials and recreation plan guidelines can be obtained from the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnr-grants. Interested individuals also may call the DNR Grants Management 24-hour voicemail line at 517-373-2724, or write to DNR, Grants Management, P.O. Box 30425, Lansing, MI 48909-7925.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state's natural resources for current and future generations.
