May 20th Woodlot Club Forestry Tour

Have you ever had questions about how to better manage your woodlot or plant a tree and wonder why it didn't grow?  If so the Clinton Conservation District can help!

On Saturday May 20th the Clinton Conservation District will be hosting a hands on Forestry tour learning session.  The session will entail walking through a woodlot while discussing the economic benefits of different forestry management techniques.  Followed up by different techniques of planting trees and how to ensure there survival.  

We will be touring at a woodlot located approximately 3 miles west of St. Johns.  From the corner of Business US-127 and M-21 head West on M-21 two and a half miles to Airport Road then head 1 mile north to Walker Road, next head west a half mile to 4545 West Walker Road.  There is no cost to attend.  Landowners interested in learning about forestry are encouraged to come. Saturday morning May 20th, 2006 from 10:00 AM -1:00 PM. 

Sign in will begin at 9:45 AM and program will start promptly at 10:00 AM.

Issues to be discussed will include;

*	Timber Stand Improvement-Bill Rockwell, Private Consulting Forester will be discussing the economics of a timber stand improvement and which trees should be cut and why.

*	Tree Planting-Tom Ward, Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) State Forester will be demonstrating several tree shelters and weed barriers along with different techniques for planting trees.  He will also be discussing site preparation that will include information about herbicides and tree to soil compatibility.
