Rouge Education Project (REP) Coordinator Job Description
Friends of the Rouge (FOTR), founded in 1986, is a non-profit environmental organization dedicated to restoration and stewardship of the Rouge River ecosystem through education, citizen involvement and other collaborative efforts. The Rouge River is one of the nation?s most polluted waterways and is located in the Metropolitan Detroit area of southeastern Michigan. The river has been the focus of intensive federal, state and local restoration efforts.
The Rouge Education Project Coordinator will be responsible for the overall coordination, implementation and evaluation of the Rouge Education Project (REP), a nationally recognized school-based water quality monitoring program founded in 1987. It involves approximately 90 K-12 schools throughout Metropolitan Detroit each year.
Under the direct supervision of the FOTR Executive Director, responsibilities of the REP Coordinator include, but are not limited to: ? Supervising the REP Outreach Coordinator and REP Assistant Coordinator;
? Coordinating the enrollment of returning REP schools and retention of REP schools and teachers;
? Assisting the Outreach Coordinator with recruiting and enrolling new REP schools;
? Monitoring the status of all schools in the REP;
? Coordinating communication with teachers and dissemination of materials (through mailings, the internet, fax and phone);
? Coordinating the planning, logistics and implementation of all REP workshops and Student Congress events (also facilitating workshops as needed);
? Working with REP team members to implement new initiatives and create new resource materials as needed;
? Conducting ongoing evaluation of the REP;
? Overseeing the REP Outreach Coordinator?s recruitment and coordination of College Student Assistants;
? Overseeing the REP Outreach Coordinator?s management of the REP Adopt-a-School Campaign and coordination of corporate volunteers
? Overseeing the ordering and distribution of monitoring equipment and resource materials to the schools and teachers participating in the REP;
? Assisting teachers, College Student Assistants, students and volunteers in collecting, analyzing and interpreting water quality monitoring data;
? Coordinating data collection, entry, tracking and reporting, assuring to the greatest extent possible and practical that schools participating in the REP provide water quality testing results to the REP staff in an accurate and timely manner;
? Coordinating, as necessary, updates to and production of the Guide to the REP (a teacher and volunteer guide), REP Resource Guide CD and all other REP written materials;
? Producing and distributing the Rouge Education Project newsletter;
? Soliciting, coordinating and tracking media coverage of REP monitoring days and serving as program spokesperson
? Working with FOTR team members and partners to maintain the correlation of the REP to the "Michigan Curriculum Framework Science Benchmarks";
? Fostering partnerships and collaborative efforts with institutions and organizations including colleges, universities and other institutions of higher learning; the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality; Wayne County Department of Environment; Earth Force/GREEN; and others to enhance the REP;
? Serving as chairperson of the Education Task Force of the FOTR Board of Directors;
? Working with the Executive Director to track REP revenues and expenses;
? Reviewing the REP pages on the FOTR web site and providing updates as needed to the webmaster;
? Working with FOTR team members to promote and build support for the REP and public education projects with key school administrators, government officials and corporate representatives;
? Assist in fundraising efforts and general partnership building; and
? Provide information necessary to fulfill the requirements of the Rouge Program Office and to meet the needs of the FOTR Board of Directors.
? Minimum BA/BS.
? Demonstrated experience in project management and implementation.
? Demonstrated organizational and leadership skills. ? Self-starter, detail-oriented, enthusiastic, innovative and capable of meeting challenges and deadlines.
? Must be a team player with trouble shooting and multi-tasking skills.
? Strong written and verbal communication skills, including telephone and public speaking.
? Commitment to environmental issues.
? Experience in formal education a plus.
? Experience with PC, MS Office and the internet.
? Must have the ability to occasionally lift 10-40 pounds.
? Must be able to walk, bend, squat, reach, sit and other such activities.
? Must be able to work in an outside environment in both winter and summer.
Reliable transportation required.
Hours, Salary & Benefits
? 40+ hours per week. Some hours will be evenings and weekends, particularly during the school year.
? Work schedule is somewhat flexible.
? This is a full-time, salaried position. Salary commensurate with experience (upper 20's to low 30's)
? $2,250 annually toward health insurance or 403b retirement plan
? 10 combined vacation/sick days per year starting
