The Traverse City Record Eagle, in a weekend investigation of would-be
Senator Majority Leader Jason Allen's campaign, 527 and other accounts,
reported on substantial financial backing from developers, state
contractors, tobacco interests and others who have put more than
$500,000 into Allen's various accounts. The newspaper details a
"secret' contribution from Carleton Farms Landfill, a subsidiary of
Republic Waste, as well as contributions from Detroit gambling
interests. The landfill is a major recipient of trash from Toronto and
a beneficiary of Allen's opposition to proposed legislation that would
increase dumping charges for mega trash haulers and end Michigan's
status as the region's cheap trash can. The paper quotes sources as
saying that if the GOP retains its Senate majority, Allen is the odds-on
favorite to succeed Ken Sikkema as Majority Leader. The stories are an
impressive piece of journalism from a regional paper that is fast
becoming the most hard-hitting in Michigan.
