The $316 million question
Critics oppose Consumers? plan to keep more than half of the money customers have paid to decommission Palisades

H-P South Haven Bureau
COVERT ? It may be 25 years from now, but eventually the Palisades nuclear power plant in Covert Township will close and have to be decommissioned.
But there are serious ? and so far unresolved ? questions about what will happen to hundreds of millions of dollars customers have paid into a fund to pay for those closing costs as a result of the pending sale of the plant by Consumers Energy to Entergy Nuclear. Here?s why: The companies announced that part of the sale includes a plan to allow Consumers Energy to retain $316 million out of the $566 million in the accumulated Palisades decommissioning fund. That would leave $250 million in the fund, or about 44 percent of what is in there now.
