...AN OZONE ACTION DAY IS IN EFFECT FOR MONDAY... JULY 31ST...

THIS INCLUDES THE FOLLOWING COUNTIES IN WEST MICHIGAN...
ALLEGAN... BENZIE... BERRIEN... CASS... GRAND TRAVERSE... KENT... LAKE... LEELANAU... MANISTEE... MASON... MUSKEGON... NEWAYGO... OCEANA... OTTAWA... VAN BUREN... AND WEXFORD COUNTIES.

Sunday, July 30th, 2006 through Monday, July 31st, 2006

Ozone: 8-hr concentrations are forecasted to be in the high Good to Moderate range Sunday. Levels Monday are forecasted to reach the Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups (USG) range in West Michigan with levels in the Moderate range across the rest of the state.

PM-2.5: 24-hr concentrations are forecasted to be generally in the Moderate range.

Forecast Discussion:
Heat and humidity linger across the state early in the new week. A thunderstorm complex associated with a frontal boundary across central Lower Michigan will bring storms across much of the state this afternoon. This front is forecasted to track back to the north later today, into Monday as upper level ridging builds in. Southwest winds at the surface will continue through the period and upper level winds will be changing to the southwest late today into tomorrow as this upper level ridging builds in. With the frontal boundary well to the north of Lower Michigan tomorrow, the chances for precipitation decrease and plenty of sunshine will be seen. This, combined with the hot southwest winds, will allow temperatures to reach well into the 90s on Monday.

Cloudy skies and storms moving through will keep 8-hr Ozone levels in the Good to middle Moderate range today. This will not be the case for Monday though. With dry conditions, sunny skies and southwest winds on Monday, Ozone development is likely across West Michigan. Therefore, we have issued an Ozone Action! Day for Monday across that portion of the state. Winds will be from the southwest across Eastern Michigan; however, wind speeds will be up and this generally slows Ozone development in that section of the state. Central and Eastern Michigan will have 8-hr Ozone levels in the Moderate range tomorrow.

Extended Forecast:
Forecast models are showing a cold front approaching the Midwestern states on Tuesday; however, over Michigan dry conditions will continue along with the hot temperatures and southwest winds. Increased Ozone levels will likely spread into the central and eastern portions of the state on Tuesday. Weather conditions will be evaluated on Monday and this forecast updated to detail any continuation of elevated Ozone levels further into the new workweek.
