MEDIA ADVISORY

Event to Commemorate 30th Anniversary of Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund

Department of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries will join Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund Board members, DNR officials, community leaders and local citizens at an event honoring the 30th anniversary of the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund on Tuesday, Aug. 8, in Farmington Hills.

The event will take place at Heritage Park located at 24915 Farmington Road in Farmington Hills. At noon, a brief ceremony will be held honoring the individuals who played a significant role in establishing the Trust Fund. A luncheon will be served following the ceremony. Heritage Park staff will provide tours of the park and nature center. Participants also will be able to view displays of other projects completed under the Trust Fund program that have been provided by local units of government from around the state.

The Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund was established in 1976 under legislation signed by then-Governor William Milliken. It set aside the oil, gas and mineral lease payments and royalties paid to the state for exploration on public lands and placed them in the Trust Fund. The Trust Fund provides competitive grants to local units of government and state agencies for land acquisition and recreation facility development projects. Applications made to the Trust Fund are scored competitively based on scoring criteria established by the Trust Fund board.

The Trust Fund board is comprised of five members - four Michigan citizens appointed by the Governor and one representative from the Michigan Natural Resources Commission.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state?s natural resources for current and future generations.
