Local Support Assists DNR Rail-Trail Project Construction

Governor Jennifer M. Granholm and Department of Natural Resources Director Rebecca Humphries today announced the DNR will soon complete construction plans and take bids for the 61-mile recreation rail-trail surface improvement project that will connect Gaylord to Mackinaw City. The 2006-2007 project is being funded through a $1.48 million grant from the Michigan Department of Transportation Enhancement Program. The balance of the funding for this $2 million project is being provided by the DNR and local contributions.

?Michigan?s trail systems are a state treasure enjoyed by residents and visitors alike,? Granholm said. ?The future I see for Michigan is one where access to trails and recreation is available to everyone.?

In July, Governor Granholm announced the state will work to link Michigan?s trail systems by building new trails and upgrading existing trails throughout the state.

?The Top of Michigan Trails Council has been the driving force behind the local fundraising efforts? Humphries said. ?We would like to acknowledge and thank the Trails Council for their commitment and continuous effort to bring together this overwhelming community financial support for the development of this significant public multipurpose recreational state trail.?

The wide variety of local financial support that soon will top the $115,000 mark is being provided by the following project supporters:

Governmental Units: Cheboygan County; Beaugrand, Ellis, Inverness, Livingston, Mackinaw, Mentor, Mullett, Nunda, Tuscarora and Wilmot townships; the city of Cheboygan and the village of Mackinaw City

Grants and Foundations: DALMAC Bicycle Tour, Michigander Bicycle Tour, PIEG Communities First Fund, Straits Area Community Foundation, First Federal Community Foundation and Otsego Wildlife Legacy Society

Chambers of Commerce: Cheboygan Area and Indian River

Tourist Bureaus: Cheboygan, Gaylord Area, Indian River and Mackinaw

Businesses and other Organizations: Mackinaw Boosters, Point Nipigon Association, Cheboygan Rotary, Citizens National Bank, First National Bank of Gaylord, Independent Bank, Bank of Northern Michigan, Mullett Lake Preservation Group, Kiwanis Club of Cheboygan, Wal-Mart (Cheboygan), Cheboygan Jaycees, B K C Insurance, CMS Energy and the Top of Michigan Trails Council

Construction on the crushed limestone surface improvement project is expected to begin in spring of 2007 and is targeted for completion by the end of the construction season.

The DNR is committed to the conservation, protection, management, use and enjoyment of the state?s natural resources for current and future generations.
