Stewardship Volunteers Needed in Southeast Michigan

State recreation officials today announced the schedule of volunteer stewardship workdays to be held throughout October in southeast Michigan state parks and recreation areas.

Volunteers are needed to cut and pile invasive, nonnative shrubs or collect native seed. These efforts will help restore the unique natural areas in these southeast Michigan state parks.

Dates, times and locations of the workdays are as follows:

* Sunday, Oct. 1, Algonac State Park (St. Clair Co.), 1 to 4 p.m.
* Saturday, Oct. 7, Island Lake Recreation Area (Livingston Co.), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Saturday, Oct. 7, Algonac State Park (St. Clair Co.), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Sunday, Oct. 8, Waterloo Recreation Area (Washtenaw Co.), 1 to 4 p.m.
* Saturday, Oct. 14, Bald Mountain Recreation Area (Oakland Co.), 9 a.m. to noon
* Saturday, Oct. 14, Highland Recreation Area (Oakland Co.), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Sunday, Oct. 15, Island Lake Recreation Area (Livingston Co.), 1 to 4 p.m.
* Wednesday, Oct. 18, Island Lake Recreation Area (Livingston Co.), 4 to 7 p.m.
* Saturday, Oct. 21, Algonac State Park (St. Clair Co.), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Saturday, Oct. 21, Waterloo Recreation Area (Washtenaw Co.), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Sunday, Oct. 22, Highland Recreation Area (Oakland Co.), noon to 4 p.m.
* Sunday, Oct. 22, Pinckney Recreation Area (Washtenaw Co.), 1 to 4 p.m.
* Saturday, Oct. 28, Brighton Recreation Area (Livingston Co.), 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.
* Sunday, Oct. 29, Algonac State Park (St. Clair Co.), 1 to 4 p.m.

Volunteers should bring appropriate clothing for their outdoor work, including long pants, boots, gloves, eye protection and drinking water.

For information about the specific tasks at each location and to obtain directions, visit the DNR Web site at www.michigan.gov/dnrvolunteers. All volunteers are asked to register using the form that can be printed from the Web site.

All motor vehicles entering a Michigan State Park or Recreation Area must display a Motor Vehicle Permit, available for purchase at the park entrance. Cost is $24 for a resident annual and $6 for a resident daily. A nonresident annual is $29 and a nonresident daily is $8.
