WLNS Channel 6 News has a story saying that Alger County
officials want to dredge the Au Train River Mouth saying
"AuTrain Township wants to dredge a channel that would
cause the river to flow more directly into the lake. "
http://www.wlns.com/Global/story.asp?S=5616254&nav=menu25_2_21
The story claims that this would prevent flooding from storms and ice movements
in Lake Superior.
The mouth of the Au Train River, about 11 miles east of Munising, on the
Lake Superior shoreline is one of Michigan's best, premier swimming
spots. A shallow river channel through the dunes with sand deposits in
the Lake and the ability to swim in any temperature of water that one might
like, the scenic sand dunes in the area....and a swimming/wading
experience particularly beneficial and safe for
young children... make the Au Train River Mouth one of Michigan's gems.
One of the unique things about the Au Train River Mouth is that every time you
visit, the river area between M-28 and Lake Superior changes.
The Au Train River Mouth is at a Michigan Department of Transportation
highway rest stop on M-28. It is an example of a prime recreational
asset for tourism and dredging this site is nothing less than killing the goose that
laid the golden egg.
At this writing I don't have many details, but any dredging that would be effective
in preventing flooding from ice dams and wind driven lake action would almost
certainly damage or destroy the beneficial swimming at this location.
I will attempt to gain additional information on this proposal and post such
information when it become available.
