Funding request pulled, but idea not dead
The proposal had drawn criticism from environmental groups, who dubbed it Plutonium State Park and said the land has residual contamination from 35 years of operation, including a containment area with 441 highly radioactive spent fuel rods, which will stay there until at least 2020.
 
WASHINGTON -- The Michigan Department of Natural Resources said Friday it's temporarily withdrawing its controversial request to begin buying the scenic property near Charlevoix where a nuclear power plant once operated and turn it into a public park.
