* Technology exists to clean mercury in state

The Detroit News By Steven Chester

The serious health effects of mercury pollution are well documented and cannot be ignored. Coal-fired power plants contribute 38 percent of Michigan's mercury emissions, the largest single source in the state. Gov. Jennifer Granholm has instructed the Department of Environmental Quality to write a rule requiring those power plants to reduce their mercury emissions by 90 percent by 2015.
