Presenting "It Grows on Trees," a woodworking competition and

Emerald ash borers threaten 700 million ash trees in Michigan. Millions
of trees have already been destroyed. The disposal costs to landowners
and local communities reach into the millions of dollars. Thousands of
tons of wood have been landfilled, chipped, or burned.=20

Many people in Michigan feel that this wood can be used for much more.
This exhibit demonstrates, through the eyes of our state's own artists
and craftspeople, how value can still be found in removed ash trees and
other "waste" wood. The wood in the show came from dead ash trees,
trees cut for road-widening and other construction projects,
apple-orchard prunings, storm-killed trees, and salvaged pallets=20

This exhibit is funded by the USDA Forest Service's Wood Education &
Resource Center, sponsored by the Southeast Michigan Resource
Conservation & Development Council, and organized by Ypsilanti artist
David Gendler.

"It Grows on Trees" runs March 1 - April 7, 2007 at Riverside Arts
Center (76 North Huron Street, Ypsilanti, MI). Prizes in the competition
will be awarded at the opening reception, March 3 from 5:00 - 7:00. A
second, reduced-scale showing will be held at Huron Valley Council for
the Arts (205 West Livingston Road, Highland, Michigan), from April 17 -
May 16, 2007.
