Well, as the mother of two Montessori school daughters, ages 10 and 7, I can tell you that they are encouraged to be civically minded and environmentally concerned. Their classes are constantly raising money for causes -- hurricane/disaster relief, shelters, and the like (they sell baked goods and handicrafts toward that end) -- and they participate in Earth Day events, recycling, native plant projects, nature study, composting, and clean-ups. This year the younger children all knitted hats and scarves to donate to children in homeless shelters. They are also encouraged to express themselves creatively and they get extraordinary one-on-one attention in their efforts.

My own seven-year-old asked her buddies to bring donations for the Humane Society to her seventh birthday party instead of presents and raised more than $70 to give to them -- her piggie bank is also dedicated to animals. And my ten-year-old has done class projects on the dangers of pesticides and on recycling, and she wants to collect donations at her birthday party for the Nature Conservancy, instead of presents. I encourage this sort of thing myself, but it really helps when it is part of their school culture.
I suspect that the Catholic schools also emphasize civic responsibility.
Anna

Did anyone else notice that a lot of the contest winners seem to be
attending Catholic or Montessori schools? I find this interesting and I
wonder why...

Student Earth Day Poster Contest Winners

As a part of this year's Earth Day Celebration being held by the
Department of Environmental Quality on Thursday, April 19, Director
Steven E. Chester will be honoring the winners of the 2007 Earth Day
poster contest. The contest was created to promote environmental
awareness by giving students from Kindergarten through 5th grade an
opportunity to design and create a poster celebrating an Earth Day
theme.

This year, more than 1,300 posters were submitted from all over
Michigan; 1st place and 2nd place winners were selected, representing
each of the six grade levels.

"We are inspired by the number of students who participated in the
contest this year," said Director Chester. "The enthusiasm and
creativity of these students serve as an example of why we must protect
our great natural resources for their enjoyment, and for their
children's enjoyment."

The posters will be decorating the walls of Constitution Hall during the
