I'm not sure but I think these are called paper wasps. Anyway, they fit
the description of the first wasp you mentioned. In the barn, they
looked nearly black.

What kind of wasp? At our house, we have always had wasps. Maybe a
slight increase in populations each year. But what we have noticed
is that there are two distinct types. One a darker wasp with slight
browning coloration in the body, the other a definitely more yellow/
black striping and ever so slightly smaller in size.
So, we asked around, describing the two to various naturalist
friends. Our impression (unscientific but I believe informed) is
that the dark wasp is a non-native wasp that is more aggressive and
taking over (or over taking) the less aggressive native wasp.

I've noticed for the last five years a decrease in bees and a steady
increase in wasps on my U.P. farm, too. As a matter of fact, last
July I accidently dislodged a huge wasp nest in my barn when I was
hauling out a bale of hay. Before I knew what was happening, I was
stung 60+ times over my arms and legs (wouldn't you know, I was
wearing shorts). I have a number of fruit trees so bees have always
been a welcome presence here. But these newcomers ...

I too am curious about wasps. I live in the Upper Peninsula of
Michigan in Houghton County. Last summer I lost my entire raspberry
crop to wasps. I have 40-50 plants and probably didn't have a pint
of berries that hadn't been damaged.

I saw three bumble type bees Sunday and a scant few of the honey
variety. What surprised me was the wasps that were swarming the
flowering trees in my yard. They were practically covering most of
the flowers. Is there a new strain of wasp loose in this country?
Adding up the costs of 'free trade' isn't adding up to be a huge
benefit: Emerald Ash Borer from China, some moth in California
imported from China, etc...
Our jobs go over there and they send us their pestilence... Not a
very fair trade...

We have one hive that has been an extravagant producer for two
summers.
Early last fall the numbers in the hive seemed down but the queen
was still
active. No bees came out during the January thaw but we figured
that was
related to the warm weather we had had. This spring: no bees: no
bodies.
