Sleeping Bear Dunes Master Plan/Wilderness Study Sleeping Bear Dunes National Lakeshore is currently in the process of developing a new General Management Plan/Wilderness Study, a document that will provide long-term management guidance for the park. Much has changed at the National Lakeshore since 1979 when the first GMP was written. The National Park Service (NPS) is actively seeking public participation to develop a new General Management Plan/Wilderness Study that will address these changes.
The National Park is under increasing pressure from public use groups who want to open up the park to total access, minimize wilderness acreage and build more boat ramps, access sites and parking lots. Preservation and protection is at a critical point.
