Re: E-M:/ We need to reorder priorities on vehicle energy savings and reduced emissions

Enviro-Mich message from RC <gonzoid1@sbcglobal.net>

Simple tune ups of existing cars would go far in helping 'green up' the planet...

Making is to that drivers could report heavily polluting diesel trucks would go far too...

Yes, 'Reduce, Reuse, Recycle' should be a mantra for now and the future...

It seems that all I hear lately in terms of reducing vehicle emissions and energy efficiency has to do with new technology.

While that's certainly important, we, as environmentalists, as well as our political leaders, need to be making the point that there are other priorities that should be given at least equal weight to technological advances. It's like the old expression, "Reduce, Reuse, Recycle." What do we always hear about? - Recycling. There's nothing wrong with recycling, but it seems that most Americans don't understand why those three R words are in the order they're in. Reducing use should come first. It saves the most resoucres. Then reuse. Lastly, for those things we CAN'T avoid using that are made from virgin materials, we recycle.

Vehicle technology needs to be thought of in the same way. At the beginning of the list should be Drive Less, Carpool, Use Public Transportation, Ride a Bike, Buy a Smaller Vehicle, etc. At the END of the list should be Improved Technology.

Problem: Consider who benefits the most from technological research and the use of that technology, and how much clout they have.
