E-M:/ Eric Sharp on Anglers of Au Sable victory re Kolke Creek

Anglers reel in a victory in court
Ruling protects AuSable River

BY ERIC SHARP

It's a wonderful precedent for environmentalism and a wonderful lesson in what a small, dedicated group of people can do to protect natural resources from the greed of businesses and the incompetence of bureaucrats.

A circuit court judge has ruled that the state Department of Environmental Quality cannot allow Merit Energy Corp. to dump 1.15 million gallons a day of treated wastewater from an oil field on the Manistee River drainage into Kolke Creek on the headwaters of the AuSable River.
