Congress gets weak-kneed in face of energy bill lobbying

For 50 years or more, the Big Three automakers and their allies in Congress have been singing the same tired tune. Look where it has gotten them — and us.

Defending the indefensible will not solve the problem. Continued dependence on foreign oil to fuel Detroit gas guzzlers is no less a threat to the national defense than a terrorist's bomb. Refusing to reduce greenhouse gases, which are helping speed global warming, is not in the planet's interests.

Energy independence, the use of alternate fuels, solar and wind energy and the reduction of greenhouse gases have never been more important.

But in Washington, it's business as usual
