Mike Bishop, Majority Leader

Michigan State Senate

Room S-106, Capitol Building

PO Box 30036

Lansing, MI 48909-7536

Dear Majority Leader Bishop,

As you well know, Michigan is facing a grave fiscal outlook that will have resounding implications for the people of our state.  We urgently request a meeting with legislative leadership on how the Legislature will act to prevent the unprecedented threat to Michigan's future posed by the current revenue impasse.  We insist that this meeting take place no later than September 12th.

The signatories to this letter represent more than 538,000 Michigan citizens, including working men and women, families, children, senior citizens and business people who are fed up with the political posturing that has left their businesses, their health, their education, and their communities at risk.

Eight months ago what all of you already knew became public

knowledge: Michigan has a structural budget deficit that threatens our schools, our public safety, our environmental programs, our health care, and our ability as a state to attract and retain the businesses that provide jobs and economic development for the future.  Now, with the certain shutdown of state services and funds for these critical programs just weeks away, we demand to know what you will do to fill the $1.8 billion budget hole left by irresponsible decisions of many past Legislatures and administrations.

Michigan citizens deserve better.  They deserve better than to have their services, jobs, and livelihoods collapse because of government inaction.  And they certainly deserve better than a last minute midnight deal that shuts them out of the debate over how we as a state turn this mess around.  As representatives of a substantial portion of those citizens, as service providers and proponents of critical programs that Michigan citizens

depend on in everyday life, we ask to meet with you no later than September 12th.

Please respond to Anne Woiwode, Sierra Club, at 517-484-2372.  We look forward to discussing responsible solutions to this pressing issue.
