Basics of the budget deal:

Raise income tax from 3.9% to 4.35% (drops back down to 3.9% between 2011 and 2015) - will raise about $765 million annually.

Sales tax expanded to some services (list at bottom) - will raise about $750 million annually.

Both will raise less this year due to the fact that they will take time to implement.

Support came primarily from the Democrat side of the aisle with the assistance of the following legislators from Republican ranks; in the House, Reps Ward and Gaffney, and in the Senate, Senators Birkholz, George, Jelinek and Van Woerkom.  Take a minute to write or call to thank all the legislators who decided that investing in Michigan’s people and infrastructure was more important that political rhetoric.

The legislature will still need reduce state spending by $440 million this fiscal year in order to balance the budget.
