Diamond on the riverThursday, October 18, 2007
By Eric English eenglish@bc-times.com | 894-9652 Midland-based Dow Chemical Co. is pledging $3.5 million to jump-start plans to build a new YMCA center in downtown Bay City. Andrew N. Liveris, Dow's chairman and chief executive officer, announced the gift on Wednesday at a dinner hosted by the Bay Area Community Foundation. ''What better way to state to the community that we care about this part of the Tri-Cities,'' Liveris said. snip: Brooks said the YMCA and Dow will work together to develop a name for the new center. The building may feature the red Dow diamond logo, he said. If that happens, it would give Dow a company presence on the Bay City skyline in the same way that Dow has its symbol on the Dow Diamond baseball stadium in Midland and the Dow Event Center - the former Saginaw Civic Center - in downtown Saginaw. http://www.mlive.com/news/bctimes/index.ssf?/base/news-10/11927206758990.xml&coll=4&thispage=3 Dow Chemical Diamonds lining the Saginaw River as high high concentrations of the chemical giant's dioxin/furans course through the river, contaminating property, poisoning fish, moving up the food chain and contaminating our nearest Great Lake, Lake Huron.
