Re: E-M:/ Michigan Environmental Council Capitol Update 10-19-07

If its aimed at children, then shouldn't it read "anyone under 18 is prohibited".  Will it also prohibit people from falling off a dock?  What if someone pushes someone else from a dock? What if the dog accidently jostles a person off the dock? How about if someone is drowning, then is it against the law to jump off to save them? How about if someone jumps into the boat and misses,is that against the law?  etc etc etc etc.

This is the dumbest law I have heard of.  It will not stop anyone from jumping , nor will it stop inappropriate litigation if someone is injured.  Kids need to be educated about water, drop offs, undertow and riptides.  That will stop some of the drowning, not a law.

You can’t stop kids with legislation.  You can only protect property owners and insurance companies against wrongful death litigation because they don’t have signage, throw rings, safety ladders, or life guards.

Admittedly, it’s the parents’ responsibility, but their parents aren’t always on site when these things happen.

Dumb idea for a law.

For context, the legislation is in response to drownings that have occurred in Lake Mich by kids who are "invincible" in spite of the many warnings and postings along these piers.
