There is a permit a coke plant on the shores of the Maumee River/Bay up for
a public hearing next Thursday and comments due the following week. One
local concern is not knowing who will own or operate the plant - this may well
be precedent setting - a nameless company, no ability to track
records, limited liability company. I was told today that they are seeking
'angel' investors.
The coke plant will use 2 million tons of coal per year and emit over 7
million pounds of pollution - go to westernlakeerie.org for specifics.
Coke is used in the production of steel and the US is importing coke from
China. This plant will yield over 1,000 construction jobs and up to 150
permanent jobs.
Question - the plant is projected to emit 2.2 billion pounds or 1.1 million
tons of CO2. CO2 is not mentioned in the permit and it is not a permitted
pollutant, but OEPA could place some requirements on the CO2.
Recommendations - suggestions
