JOB SUMMARY:  American Rivers seeks an Outreach Director to lead our efforts to engage civic and community leaders across the nation to safeguard and improve the health of their local rivers, and to promote local, state, and federal policies that protect and restore rivers and water resources. 

We are seeking a dynamic, civic-minded person with experience engaging civic and community leaders, who has great "people" skills and strong media experience, is politically savvy, and has excellent organizing skills.  A solid public policy background, superior writing and editing skills, and proven management skills are required. 

The position will be located in our Washington, D.C. office.  The Director reports to the Vice President for Government Affairs and Outreach.

 
ABOUT AMERICAN RIVERS:  American Rivers is a national non-profit conservation organization that protects healthy natural rivers for the benefit of communities, fish and wildlife. Program staffs are expert advocates who develop practical policy solutions and work with civic and community leaders to implement those solutions at the local, state and federal level. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Lead the organization's efforts to engage, organize and mobilize civic and community leaders, organizations and individuals to take action to protect and restore rivers in the United States.
Support American Rivers' core programmatic campaigns and initiatives (see www.americanrivers.org ) by mobilizing grassroots and grasstops (i.e.civic/community leaders including mayors, governors, business leaders, and other key decision makers) to support and take action on key policy issues.

Cultivate and manage relationships with partner organizations, including representing American Rivers at conferences, making presentations, and giving training workshops to advance the organization's program priorities.
Manage a staff of 2-3 full-time employees to achieve measurable outcomes.  Develop and manage annual budget and work plans for Outreach staff.

Work collaboratively with staff in other departments and in the field offices to advance annual Outreach goals and objectives. This includes managing core products such as our annual America's Most Endangered Rivers report, National River Cleanup, River Action Day on Capitol Hill, and other important initiatives.

Understand and support the organization's strategic plan and long-term goals.

Serve as a leader to engage with other staff members throughout the organization to integrate our work, maximize our effectiveness and maintain good staff morale.
JOB REQUIREMENTS AND MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Master's degree or equivalent experience.
Five to seven years experience in conservation or cause-related organizing.
Experience working with elected officials, community leaders and other key decision makers.
Experience working with grassroots and grasstops activists.
Proven ability to manage staff and budgets.
General knowledge and background in river conservation and environmental issues.
Excellent oral and written communication skills.
Proven ability to work collaboratively and motivate colleagues and partners.
Understanding of online outreach technologies and database management, including email activism systems.
Ability to meet deadlines and work effectively on diverse projects.
Experience with river conservation issues preferred.
