Dr. Gordon Edwards' presentation: "The Radioactive Legacy of the
Nuclear Age" from the "Binational Forum on Dangers of
Nuclear Power in the Great Lakes/ Steps to a Sustainable Future"
held in November in Warren, will be shown on Comcast Public Access TV,
(Michigan) Channel 17 (Genessee County area) Friday, Jan. 4th at
9:30 pm. It will also be shown Tuesday, Jan. 8th at 7:30 p.m. and again
Sunday, Jan. 13th at 9:30 p.m.
Dr. Gordon Edwards is President of the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear
Responsibility/Regroupement pour la surveillance du nucléaire in Quebec.
He has a Ph.D. in math and teaches at Vanier College in Montreal. In 1975
he co-founded the Canadian Coalition for Nuclear Responsibility (CCNR)
and rose to prominence as one of Canada?s best known independent experts
on nuclear technology, uranium, and weapons proliferation. He created the
CCNR website: www.ccnr.org He
was awarded the 2006 Nuclear-Free Future Award in the Education Category.
Dr. Edwards first became involved in uranium mining during the Cluff Lake
Board of Inquiry into Uranium Mining in Saskatchewan in 1977, where he
cross-examined industry and government witnesses on a daily basis for
three weeks. In 1978, Dr. Edwards produced a ground-breaking
analysis showing that the cancer risk from radon gas is much higher than
Canadian authorities claimed. His work was confirmed by the BC Medical
Association and by experts hired by the Atomic Energy Control
Among his many accomplishments, Dr. Edwards was instrumental in bringing
about a halt to uranium exploration in Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova
Scotia, and British Columbia.
This is quite timely, as Michigan faces possible uranium mining in the
U.P. and at least one or more possible new nuclear plants. -Kay Cumbow
