Environmentally Concerned Citizens of South Central Michigan
(ECCSCM) have kept track on their website (www.nocafos.org
)of citations and violations by the dozen plus concentrated animal feeding
operations in the Hudson area (Lenawee/ Hillsdale County border), based FOIA’s
obtained in coordination with Sierra Club. In December the tally for the
number of violations by the CAFOs in this area rose to 275, with 6 NEW citations against Vreba
Hoff Dairy LLC.

December 2007 - 272, 273, 274. 275 - Vreba-Hoff fined $8,000 for dam safety
violations under a Consent Agreement with DEQ's Land and Water Management
Division, after construction of four waste lagoons/dams at the dairy

November 2007 - 271 - DEQ details violations in Vreba-Hoff Monthly Progress Reports, including "a clear and flagrant violation of the 'truck'
provisions of the Interim Order." DEQ notes that Vreba-Hoff's
"agreement to truck excess waste in lieu of cow removal is an important
component of the Interim Order," and "Vreba-Hoff's failure to truck
waste throughout the month of September" was not addressed as required.
DEQ Letter (November 14, 2007)
October 2007 - 270 - Vreba-Hoff cited
for illegal discharge (apparently long-term
and on-going) into South Medina Drain.
DEQ samples show high levels of nitrate and E. coli in effluent from a tile
coming "directly from the facility production area" and located on
the south side of the headwaters of this Bean Creek tributary. This tile was
not dye-tested as required by the 2004 Consent Judgment. Vreba-Hoff has until
Dec. 28, 2007 to complete dye-testing.
