E-M:/ RE: February 7 Joint DEQCommunity Meeting

-------------------------------------------------------------------------
Enviro-Mich message from "Rita Jack" <rita.jack@sierraclub.org>
-------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Mr. Musser,

Perhaps Dow believes there is nothing new to share with the public, but we
believe this is not so. Many members of the public look forward to a
meeting where we are allowed to hear the truth about the current situation
in the rivers and Bay, and what to expect in the future, truth that Dow
Chemical representatives won't be there to try to twist. The public will
finally be able to enjoy free and open flow of information and discussion
without you there trying to control it.

Respectfully - sir, we don't need your cookies and diet sodas and grand
expensive meeting hall. We want to hear the truth and we don't want your
interference. I'm looking forward to the Feb. 7 meeting.

Sincerely,
-Rita Jack

Subject: RE: February 7 Joint DEQCommunity Meeting

 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Joint Dow/MDEQ Dioxin Meeting Cancelled

MIDLAND, MICH. (January 31, 2008) - The Dow Chemical Company today
announced its decision to decline participation in the upcoming
quarterly Tri-Cities Dioxin Community Meeting - typically co-hosted by
Dow and the Michigan Department of Environmental Quality (MDEQ) - due to
lack of sufficient new information available at this time to review with
the public. The joint meeting had been scheduled to take place on Feb.
7, 2008, from 6:30 to 9:00 p.m. at the Horizons Conference Center in
Saginaw, Mich. The MDEQ plans to announce that it will be hosting an
alternative meeting on the same date.

Commenting on the decision, Greg Cochran, Dow's Michigan Dioxin
Initiative Director said: "While we continue to place a high value on
the quarterly community meeting process, we do not think it is a good
use of time and resources for the public, Dow or the MDEQ to hold
meetings when there is insufficient new (since the November 28, 2007
meeting) information to discuss. Due to Dow's submission of an array of
significant reports to MDEQ in February and March, the agenda for our
next planned, quarterly community meeting on May 7, promises to be
sufficiently robust to ensure a meaningful exchange of information for
everyone attending."

Dow anticipates including the following information in the February and
March submissions:

* A complete summary report of the GeoMorph sampling and
analysis of middle Tittabawassee River sediments and floodplain soils
conducted during 2007.

* A summary report of preliminary sampling conducted late last
year by Dow in the Saginaw River and Bay.

* A report of findings from new Dow studies of fish and wild
game in the Tittabawassee River and Saginaw River area.

* Reports on findings from screening level human health and
ecological risk assessments for the upper Tittabawassee River sediments
and soils conducted by Dow contractors during 2007.
