An excellent documentary on this topic will broadcast on all Michigan
PBS stations on April 15 at 9 PM. A production of Michigan
Television/WFUM, "Where Do The Children Play?" examines how
restrictive patterns of sprawl, congestion, and endless suburban
development across America are impacting children's mental and
physical health and development.

The Nature Conservancy just put out a survey on this issue. Go to
their
website. Also urge all to read "The Last Child in the Woods" by
Richard
Louv. Powerful. One quote, "I like to play inside because that's
where
all the electric outlets are located," by a elementary age child.

Hi, Folks --
Her is an article from a few days ago in Scientific American -- young
people
are spending proportionately much less time outdoors.
"It would take 80 million more per capita visits to parks to equal
those
that were happening in 1987" -- there is similar news for hunting and
fishing experiences.
This comes at a time, of course, when unparalleled threats to the
stability
of our environment come from the very likely impacts of climate
change.
More than ever before we will need an upcoming generation of
environmental
leaders who can truly understand and appreciate the outdoors.
Perhaps it's time to start taking our kids outdoors, pushing them
outdoors
on their own as we can -- a whole lot more?
