WAL-MART TO ADDRESS SUSTAINABILITY PRACTICES,

LAUNCH MSU SPEAKER SERIES ON SUPPLY CHAIN INNOVATIONS

East Lansing – The Food SCENE Research Project at Michigan State University (MSU) will host Janelle Kearsley, director of Corporate Strategy and Sustainability for Wal-Mart Stores, Inc., who will discuss “Business Sustainability: 21st Century Leadership” on Wednesday, March 13, 2008, from 3pm to 5:30pm, at the Kellogg Hotel & Conference Center on the campus of MSU. The event kicks off “The Food SCENE Dialogues: Supply Chain Enhancement for the New Economy,” a speaker series to create discussion among the scientific and business communities, and the public, about controversial technologies and approaches in the food supply chain with significant potential impact. The public is encouraged to attend this free event—seat reservations are encouraged.

Kearsley works to incorporate social and environmental sustainability into Wal-Mart’s business practices, with goals that include being supplied 100 percent by renewable energy, creating zero waste and selling products that help sustain resources and the environment. Her team, established in 2005, is part of Wal-Mart's drive to incorporate social and environmental sustainability into its business practices. Previously, Kearsley served as senior manager of Strategy and Consumer Insights within the Marketing Department and completed the Wal-Mart MBA Leadership Development Program, where she rotated through six Wal-Mart business units.

MSU is a global leader in food system and supply chain research. The Food SCENE Research project, led by Dave Weatherspoon, associate professor of Food and Agribusiness Management in the MSU Department of Agricultural, Food and Resource Economics, is focused on conducting research on organizational, social and technological innovations that impact the food supply chain. Many other MSU departments, institutes and endowed chairs are event co-sponsors.
