House Passes Landmark Energy Legislation

Statement by Abby Rubley – Michigan League of Conservation Voters

“Yesterday marked the passing of the most comprehensive energy package to date by the Michigan Legislature.  This package of bills puts Michigan on the path towards a new energy future – one that will create jobs, reduce global warming pollution and protect our Great Lakes ways of life.  This move means that Michigan can avoid having to build costly, polluting and dirty coal plants.

Passing a renewable portfolio standard of 10% by 2015 is a good first step in helping Michigan attract investments and jobs in order to compete in today’s economy.  Michigan has the manufacturing capability and knowledge to become a leader in the renewable energy sector.  These bills help us move forward in this brave new world.

The bills also established an energy efficiency program requiring the utility companies to establish plans to reduce energy use by 1% per year.  Energy Efficiency programs are the cleanest, fastest and cheapest way for Michigan to break its $20 billion addiction to out-of-date and out-of-state dirty, polluting energy sources.

We call on the Senate to follow the lead of the House and take up this legislation and put Michigan on the path towards a clean energy future.  We cannot afford to remain in the 20th century when it comes to our energy production.  Michigan stands to gain greatly from this move and we are encouraged by the leadership shown in the Michigan House of Representatives.”
