Grand Rapids, MI- The League of Conservation Voters, which works to turn environmental values into national priorities, today announced the endorsement of Vern Ehlers in his bid for re-election representing Michigan's Third District. Ehlers earned a 70% rating on the LCV Scorecard in 2007.*
"Rep. Ehlers works to conserve Michigan's resources," LCV representative and Michigan native Kerry Duggan said. "As the lead Republican cosponsor of the Clean Water Restoration Act (H.R. 2421) he fought to prevent pollution and invasive species from contaminating the Great Lakes."
Duggan added, "Rep. Ehlers recognizes the threat of global warming and has voted to expand the use of wind, solar, biomass, and hydro power. He sees efficiency improvements in buildings as a cheap and long-lasting way to reduce greenhouse gases and recognizes the potential of renewable energy to create green jobs here in Michigan."
Rep. Ehlers has said his background as a research physicist "impacts the way I approach issues like energy and the environment, where a full understanding of the fundamental science helps determine my position." Having suffered from acute asthma as a child, he is also dedicated to ensuring that inhabitants of the district breathe clean air.
"Rep. Ehlers has already proved his commitment to resolving Michigan's current environmental issues," Duggan concluded. "By remaining in Congress, he will ensure that Michigan is at the forefront of conservation and is poised to make the most of the green job revolution."
