Today's Federal Register contains a notice about a nationwide Draft
Generic Environmental Impact Statement in regard to
In Situ Leaching Uranium Mining. With this technique,
chemicals in liquids are used to leach uranium ore in place
through drilling of liquid injection and uranium liquids removal
wells. While this method avoids the creation of hazardous
mining wastes from large amounts of uranium mine tailings, the
method may pose some groundwater risks.

This issue could become relevant to Michigan since the
Upper Peninsula is a known prior location of uranium
exploration activity.
