These restrictive moves by the "guvmint" may seem draconian to libertarians and farm interests, but if CWD gets loose, it will devastate not only the farming interests but hunting. I have been very concerned that the MDA and farming interests have pressed hard to loosen up import of deer, elk or moose.

Just to reinforce this tightening- CWD is caused by the same mechanism (a prion) that causes mad cow disease; however, I think it still unknown if the CWD prion can jump to people (or to cattle) as mad cow prions did. Cooking does not seem to inactivate them. The statement "To date, there is no evidence that CWD presents a risk to humans." does not explain these risks adequately, and that leads to policy violations.

Michigan’s First Case of Chronic Wasting Disease Detected at Kent County
Deer Breeding Facility

LANSING - The Michigan departments of Agriculture (MDA) and Natural
Resources (DNR) today confirmed the state’s first case of Chronic Wasting Disease
(CWD) in a three-year old white-tailed deer from a privately owned cervid (POC)
facility in Kent County.

The state has quarantined all POC facilities, prohibiting the movement of
all - dead or alive - privately-owned deer, elk or moose. Officials do not yet
know how the deer may have contracted the disease. To date, there is no evidence that CWD presents a risk to humans.
